I have worked with the PicSea team as a marine biologist colleague to explore the utility of their AUVs for biodiversity and blue carbon surveys in Scottish coastal environments. These small AUVs offer a promising and cost-effective solution to survey challenging habitats at scale, such as steep surfaces and spaces with limited access. Beyond the novel and rugged simplicity of the design, what most struck me was the capacity of the PicSea AUVs for many hours of continuous operation. It is also worth noting that this was matched by the tireless dedication of the team to fine tune mission parameters to address visibility and stratification issues! It has been a pleasure to work with PicSea in the field and I hope I have opportunities to continue doing so in the future.
